Nokia XL is the company’s one of the first Android devices, this smartphone was launched with Nokia X andNokia X+. Nokia X and Nokia X+ are almost identical with only difference being the RAM, Nokai X+ comes with a little higher RAM. Let us keep Nokia X and Nokia X+ aside and speak about the Nokia XL only. This device is drawing a lot of attention from buyers; it is a 5-inch device falling in the phablet segment. Right now the market is demanding larger smartphones; people prefer larger display over the compact ones. The larger display on the Nokia XL has a WVGA resolution and does not affect the buyers too much in terms of size and weight.
The Nokia XL is likely to launch this week in India and will carry a budget price tag, we expect the price to be around Rs 9000.
With only about 1.5-inch difference in overall size people prefer the Nokia XL over other Nokia Android phones. Lets have a deeper look into the specs and find out what this device holds for a common user.
Design
We all like Nokia’s Lumia design, Nokia some sort of modified the design and brought it down to Asha lines of smartphones with minor changes and crystal covering in the latest ones. The Nokia XL’s design is similar to both Asha series of phones with multiple color choices. Like the Lumia devices this one also features Power/Unlock key on the right hand side along with Volume controls for easy one hand navigation. The front side of the phone is dominated by a 5-inch massive WVGA display and accommodates the in-call speaker along with Proximity and light sensor on top. The bottom of the display has only the back key with no more cluttering of buttons.
Display and Software
Like other Nokia X smartphones this one also runs on the Nokia X OS, this OS is based on Android Jelly Bean Open Source project. Nokia has heavily customized the Operating System to look more like Windows OS with the Tile kind of view on the home screen. This smartphone is not a Google certified and does not feature Google services like Playstore, Gmail and Hangouts on board. However one can install these services unofficially using third party ports (I don’t recommend that). This smartphone also allows installation and download of third party apps from third party app stores as well.
Like said earlier it comes with a 5-inch WVGA display with a resolution of 480x800 with a pixel density of 187 pixels per inch. A lot of people don’t find the 5-inchers convenient to use with single hand, that’s probably because of the odd placement of the physical buttons. This smartphone is also not very comfortable using with one hand (especially the typing and calling part) but checking up notifications and unlocking the phone with single hand works well. The display is based on IPS technology, meaning the user will have brighter output without hitting hard on the battery.
Camera and Hardware
Considering the fact that this is an entry level phablet you would not get disappointed with the presence of a pair of low resolution cameras on board. The rear camera on the device comes with a resolution of 5-MegaPixel while the front camera holds a 2-MegaPixel resolution. The rear camera on the device is accompanied with Autofocus and LED flash for better photography and also comes with support for 480p video capture.
The Nokia XL is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 2 active cores. There is Adreno 203 GPU helping the device off load some minor tasks from the primary processor. There is a 768MB of RAM supplementing sufficient torque for better performance. Further there are Accelerometer, GPS and Proximity sensors on this device helping the device with core Android features.
Storage and Battery
These are the 2 areas which a lot of Android users are not happy with. Lot of Android smartphones come with smaller battery and limited storage, which after some point frustrates the user and forces him or her to switch the device. In Nokia XL’s case the device offer freedom in the memory segment and has a decent 2,000mAH battery. It gives user the freedom to expand the on board storage by up to 32GB using a micro SD card. And the 2,000mAH battery according to Nokia will give a talk time of 16-hours on 2G and 13-hours on 3G. the standby time of the device with one full charge is expected to be around 720-hours.
Connectivity
On connectivity front this smartphone has 3G and WiFi for high speed mobile internet and for Wireless LAN networks. There is also support for Edge and GPRS data connections using 2G network. The Nokia XL has Bluetooth for wireless data transfer and media control along with a micro USB port that assists one in physical PC connectivity and data transfer.
Verdict
This is not a high end smartphone, its an entry level smartphone that has the potential to deliver satisfactory performance and can compete in the mid-range segment. We all love the Nokia’s tough build quality on phones, this one is not the toughest smartphone in the market but it has a better build quality than other cheap Android phones in the market. People who are looking for a entry-to-mid range smartphones must give this one a try.
